THE HIGH-GARDEN TOWER
CREATING SYNERGIES BETWEEN NATURE + THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT
Our site is located on the former alameda naval base, a peninsula with panoramic views of the San Francisco skyline. Alameda is warm with mediterranean like climate making for a great retreat from the winds that line the pacific boundary of the Bay Area. Prior to the development of the Naval Base, Alameda was populated by lush forests and natural marsh lands. The aim of the master plan in Alameda Point is to create a better synergy between nature and the built environment.
The idea behind our tower and the master plan of our city aims to celebrate the cultural and natural vibrancy of the Bay Area, while highlighting its original people, The Ohlone natives. Our tower is inspired by the tule, a plant native to freshwater marshes; it has a thick rounded green stem, growing 3 to 10 ft tall, with long grass like leaves. The tule is a major element in the Ohlone culture, it allowed them to build boats to travel, and weave baskets to carry goods and water. We took inspiration from the tule’s structural strength, wind resisting forces, and flexibility to develop the structural design for our 1,800 ft tall tower.
