THE HONUA COFFEE SHOP

CONCEPT

In Hawaiian teachings, there is a story called Bowl of Light. It says we are all born with a bowl filled with light, which if tended to can develop into a strong source of life energy. However, overtime our Bowls can get filled with ‘rocks’ taking the form of burden, expectations and negative emotions dimming our light and weighing down our Bowl. Through a Ceremony, one relinquishes all of their ‘rocks’ and re-frames all of the knowledge acquired overtime while restoring their Bowl of Light.

In the Hawaiian language, Honua means ground or earth. Honua can also be used in a spiritual way in which the meaning translates into ‘beginning’ or to be well-grounded. This has a correlation with the concept of the Bowl-of-Light being the source of life energy. This energy is found in an individual from birth, the beginning of a cycle, the grounding of life.

OHE KAPALA - THE SKIN

Ohe Kapala are bamboo stamps with very intricate designs. These were used in Polynesia in ancient times to create repetitive patterns onto kapa (cloth).

The intricate designs created through the use of Ohe Kapala were implemented into the concept by representing the rocks that deposit in the Bowl of Light. The patterns create voids through the use of positive and negative space which allow for light to seep into the volume in a scattered way, just as rocks would.
